As a dog owner, I take a huge amount of pride in my amazing canine companion. At this point in my life, he basically takes the role of my child. With that being said, when you are out and about with your pup and a stranger walks over and says ” WOW, I wish my dog behaved like yours”, you jump for joy and take out your acceptance speech for “Dog Parent of the Year”, because you have won at life!
Having a dog should be a joy in your life, not an added stress. I recently began interning with an extremely talented dog training company, KeenDog. I have learned so much already, but I know there is still much more to learn.
#1 Tip for Training Your Dog: Train yourself! Obedient dogs come from educated handlers. Dog training techniques are completely unnatural for us humans; our speech, body language, body movements. Your brain and your dogs brain are wired differently. Learning to communicate in a way that makes sense in their mind is the first and most important step in training. You can’t expect a student to pass with flying colors when the professors don’t speak their language (This is a metaphor. You don’t actually need to learn to bark).
Myth Buster: You CAN, that’s right, I said CAN teach an old dog new tricks! GASP! This saying was crafted to make us humans feel better about ourselves by shifting the blame to the dog. Every dog has the potential to be well behaved. It’s all about consistency, patience and the right training techniques. Don’t give up people! Yes, it is hard work and can be frustrating at times but in the end you’ll have a well trained dog and one less stress in your life.
Think about all the things you can do with your dog. Now think about doing those things with a well trained dog vs an untrained dog. Am I wrong in assuming your first visual was a lot more fun than your second? Visual number one is possible. It may seem impossible at the moment, but with education and consistency it is possible. I promise! Before you know it you will be receiving the compliment that others wish their dog behaved like yours.
I am extremely excited about this opportunity with KeenDog. Not only am pursuing a career in what I love to do, but the owners are incredible. Phillip and Katrina are so knowledgable and they break it down so their clients (the dog owners) truly understand the science behind their techniques. As I said earlier obedient dogs come from educated handles. That is KeenDog’s focus. Side-note: I want you guys to know that they didn’t pay me to write those things. I actually think them.
