Beyond the Basics: 6 Dog Training Tips to Take Your Dog Training to The Next Level
Aug 13, 2024Training your dog goes beyond teaching basic commands. To truly connect with your dog and address complex behavior issues, you need advanced strategies. Here are six expert tips to help you break through behavior barriers and take your dog’s training to the next level.
1. Understand the Root Cause of Behavior
Before addressing any behavior, it’s crucial to understand why it’s happening. Dogs often act out due to fear, anxiety, or unmet needs. Unmet needs are one of the most common causes of destructive behaviors. Each dog has a different baseline of balance like we do as humans. Observe your dog’s behavior and environment to identify triggers. If your dog is acting out of character, try physical and mental stimulation in a proactive approach before labeling and reacting. Addressing the root cause can lead to more effective training solutions.
2. Employ Balanced Training Techniques
Balanced training involves using all four quadrants of operant conditioning to guide your dog’s behavior. Positive reinforcement means rewarding desired behaviors with treats, praise, or play, encouraging your dog to repeat those behaviors. Negative reinforcement involves removing an unpleasant stimulus when the desired behavior occurs, such as releasing pressure on a leash when your dog stops pulling. Alongside reinforcement, applying appropriate negative punishment—like briefly withholding attention or play—can help correct unwanted behaviors. Setting clear boundaries and consistently applying these techniques ensures your dog understands what behaviors are expected and how to meet them.
3. Incorporate Mental Stimulation Exercises
Advanced training isn’t just about physical commands; it’s also about mental stimulation. Engage your dog’s mind with puzzles, interactive toys, and training games. For example, hide treats around the house and have your dog find them, or teach them complex tricks like a formal retrieval (can be useful to grab the remote or leash for you), roll over, piggy back, etc... mental challenges can improve focus and reduce behavioral issues as well as provide a challenge for you both to enhance your relationship.
4. Implement Consistent and Clear Communication
Consistency is key when training your dog. Ensure that everyone in your household uses the same commands and follows the same rules. Clear communication helps your dog understand what is expected and reduces confusion. For example, “sit” means different things to different family members; it can mean sit and stay or come to me and sit and leave or some family members may not care if the dog lies down instead. Becoming consistent with your commands can lead to a consistent result.
5. Practice Commands in Various Settings
Dogs need to learn to generalize commands across different environments. Practice your commands and play in various locations, with different distractions, and at different times of day. This helps your dog understand that the command applies regardless of where they are or what’s happening around them.
6. Enlist a Training Buddy
Having a training buddy can be incredibly beneficial. Find a friend with a dog to join your training sessions. They can help by providing additional distractions or different scenarios for your dog to adapt to, and offer a fresh perspective on training techniques. A buddy can also assist with ensuring successful repetitions of good behavior, ensuring your dog gets plenty of practice. Moreover, positive interactions with another dog around allows your dog to associate positive experiences with strange dogs, reducing stress in public and helping shape a confident, happy and well trained dog.
