Meet the Team: Phill
Nov 05, 2024In this series, we’ll be chatting with every member of the KeenDog team. We’ll dive into their origin stories, their passions, and the experiences that have shaped them into the trainers you know and love. And maybe we’ll discover a few quirks, too!
Next up, KeenDog co-founder and client relations manager, Phill…
Tell us about your first dog!
My first dog, Zoey, was the catalyst for my journey into the world of dog training. She taught me the importance of communication, patience, and the profound bond that can be built between a dog and their owner. This experience with Zoey fueled my passion to delve deeper into understanding canine behavior and to help others create that same connection with their dogs.
What inspired you to become a dog trainer?
My journey into dog training was inspired by the incredible bond I formed with Zoey and the drive to help others experience that same connection with their dogs. My wife also played a crucial role in getting me into training, showing me the impact it can have on both dogs and their owners.
What is your favorite thing (behavior, sport, etc.) to train and why?
I have a particular love for decoy and sport dog training. There's an incredible blend of physical intensity and precision in these activities that constantly pushes both the handler and the dog to reach new heights. The challenge of honing these skills and working towards perfect execution is exhilarating and the bond you share with your dog working as a seamless team is immeasurable.
What is one thing you wish dog owners knew or understood?
I wish more owners understood that a balanced approach to training is key. It's not just about teaching commands but about building a relationship founded on structure, trust, and mutual respect. Instead of focusing solely on fixing a single issue, it's important to enhance your dog's overall skills through physical and mental stimulation. This holistic approach often creates a domino effect, where addressing one aspect of their behavior can lead to improvements in others, creating a more harmonious and well-rounded canine companion.
If you could teach your dog one human skill, what would it be?
Sometimes, I find myself preferring the company of dogs over people. If I could teach my dog one human skill, it would be the ability to communicate verbally. Just imagine how much clearer and more meaningful our interactions would be if they could express their thoughts and feelings in words! It would bring a whole new level of understanding and connection to our relationship.
What’s the most memorable moment you’ve had while training a dog?
There have been countless memorable moments with my dogs and clients' dogs. Traveling the world with my dogs fills my heart with memories, like watching my daughter run freely on the beach or taking walks in a foreign country. These experiences are priceless. Equally rewarding is seeing clients' dogs transform their lives, achieving things they never thought possible. Whether it's earning certificates, hiking, or even just accompanying their families to soccer games and breweries, it's incredible to witness their progress. I'm grateful to play a part in these journeys and to help build such a wonderful community.
If you were a dog, what breed would you be and why?
I see myself as a cross between a Malinois and a Border Collie. The Malinois side represents drive, determination, and physical intensity, while the Border Collie reflects my love for problem-solving and mental agility. Both breeds require a balance of structure and freedom, much like my approach to training.
If you could only have one dog breed for the rest of your life, what breed would you choose and why?
If I had to choose one dog breed to have for the rest of my life, I would slightly give the edge to a Golden Retriever. They are incredible dogs - carefree, bringing joy and smiles to everyone they meet, and possessing a natural intelligence that makes them a pleasure to train and live with. As I get older, I find myself appreciating a bit more reliability and certainty in a dog, and Goldens provide that, especially with a toddler around. However, it's really about the individual dog rather than the breed. We have owned multiple breeds, and each one has offered unique and rewarding experiences.
If you could train any famous dog from movies or TV, who would it be and why?
I’d love to train Beast from The Sandlot. Imagine the challenge of turning that legendary ball-eating, fence-jumping giant into a well-mannered canine companion! I bet Beast could use a little guidance on impulse control—though I’d make sure to keep the baseballs out of reach!
Anything else you want the people to know about you? Your training style?
I’m passionate about pushing both dogs and people to reach their full potential. Whether I’m training dogs, coaching clients, or working with other trainers, I bring the same drive and determination to help everyone achieve their best. One of my favorite ways to connect with my dogs is by lacing up my running shoes and exploring new areas with them. Seeing my dogs run side by side in harmony is a reminder of the strong bond we share. My training style is all about play, balance, and learning through exploration and making mistakes. I believe in creating a supportive environment where growth happens naturally.
